We are super excited to announce a weekend programme celebrating the music and artists of WOMAD over Saturday 24 – Sunday 25 July from Radio WOMAD and BBC Radio 3.
Our weekend programming will aim to create the spirit of WOMAD on air, with exclusive interviews and archive footage from WOMAD’s past.
This year Radio WOMAD are pulling out all the stops and coming to you LIVE at home online, streaming via Mixcloud. Rather than listening in the campsite, or on your way to site in your car you can tune in from the comfort of your very own home and garden, and get the same WOMAD spirit!
Listen out for exclusive sessions from artists that have performed at WOMAD over the past ten years as well as a fantastic selection of tracks from around the world.
Feast your eyes on the Radio WOMAD Schedule and find out who is broadcasting, and when over the weekend. You can plan which live sessions you’d like to hear too! The broadcast will run from 10am – 10pm on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th July 2021.
Some of the artists who were due to perform at WOMAD will bring instead the spirt of WOMAD to audiences on air, with live and exclusive studio sessions from BBC Broadcasting House for Radio 3.
Among those taking part in the first programme are Italian collective Amaraterra with pizzica music from the country’s south-eastern region, Welsh guitarist Gwenifer Raymond – specialist in the American primitive fingerstyle – and Electric Jalaba – a fusion of traditional gnawa and electronic dance and featuring the vocals and guimbri playing of Simo Lagnawi.
In the second programme, there will be live sets from Egyptian-born Australian oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros; Japanese vocalist Hatis Noit, who draws on everything from Gagaku and opera to Bulgarian and Gregorian chant; and Elaha Soroor & Kefaya, a new take on Afghan folk with influences from jazz, dub and electronica.
“We are delighted to be working with WOMAD and so many of its artists to create a WOMAD experience on Radio 3. Music of many international cultures is a distinctive and vital part of our output. It will be a pleasure to showcase so much extraordinary music making from our BBC studio, and to recreate the spirit of this wonderful festival.” — Alan Davey, BBC Radio 3 Controller
