The performance of living legend Sir Tom Jones will be the culmination of Suikerrock 2022. With a clock of a voice, a career of almost 60 years, dozens of awards and a cartload of classics such as ‘It’s Not Unusual’, ‘Kiss’, ‘Delilah’, ‘What’s New Pussycat’, ‘I’ll Never Fall In Love Again’ and ‘Sex Bomb’ it becomes a finale in absolute beauty. Sir Tom is one of the few musical artists who was one of the founders of modern popular music, and who is still active both live and in the studio to this day. His irresistible show traverses musical eras and genres, breaking class differences and appealing to young and old, man and woman, mainstream and cutting edge. Sir Tom Jones is always about the power of the song, the power of the voice!

Niels Destadsbader is now anchored in the Flemish hearts. His conquest started in 2016, and after 4 albums and more than ten 10 Flemish no1 hits he has become incontournable. With the singles ‘Conquer me’, ‘Skwon Meiske’, ‘Mee Naar Boven’ and ‘De Wereld Draait Voor Jou’ he has already won the Zomerhit four times, and now there are already nine MIA’s in his trophy cabinet. He now feels at home in the Sportpaleis, because he has already managed to fill it to the brim eight times. With ‘Stronger’ he delivered a very personal record at the end of last year.

Emperor, king, admiral, Clouseau know them all! It’s hard not to speak in superlatives when it comes to this unparalleled monument from Dutch-language pop. With the record from their 37-year career, you can fill a voluminous book. Some impressive figures: 78 singles, of which four no. 1 hits, 26 albums of which 12 ended up at no. 1, 13 end-of-year concert series, good for a sloppy 120 sold-out Sports Palaces … But there is no question of slowing down. In March Clouseau’s fourteenth studio album ‘Jonge Wolven’ will be released, with another collection of high-quality songs – the guiding principle throughout Clouseau’s career. It will be a happy reunion on July 31, because Koen and Kris are already on the Tienen stage for the 11th time!

In 1987 they were at the first edition of Suikerrock, and now 35 years later, they can inaugurate the new festival site: De Kreuners! Originally, they were scheduled for 2020 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their most successful record ‘Here and Now’. Now, two years later, Walter, Axl, Jan, Erik and of course Tienenaar Ben Crabbé finally open their overflowing tin of Belpop hits. An attack on your vocal cords because it will be an hour of roaring along with ‘She has style’, ‘Cous Cous cries’, ‘Cozy togetherness’, ‘Ik Wil Je’, ‘Zo Jong’, ‘Verliefd Op Chris Lomme’ or ‘Layla’. Open air or not, the roof has to come off!

On Sundays around tea-time we invariably bring a musical legend. This year it is our northern neighbours Peter Koelewijn & The Rockets who bring their ‘Blonde hit machine’ to Tienen. Peter Koelewijn and Tom Jones are allowed to blow out 82 candles this year. How appropriate can his hit ‘You’re getting older dad’ be! He introduced Dutch rock ‘n’ roll about 60 years ago with the classic ‘Kom van dat dak af’, and scored in the following decades with sing-alongs ‘Angeline (my blonde sex machine)’, ‘Clap but in your hands’, ‘Robbie’, ‘Marijke’ and ‘As long as the engine runs’.

We open with a young actor/musician. Mathias Vergels became known for his role as Lowie Bomans in the soap opera Thuis, but that could change in the future. At the beginning of 2020, the debut album ‘Waar is Mathi?’ was released, with which he proved himself to be one of the better Flemish pop singers. The corona pandemic and a sudden surge of Tinitus (ringing in the ears) threw a spanner in the works, but now he is back with a new love at his side, a participation in The Masked Singer, a new single and a new backing band: The Good Example.

Suikerrock 2022 will take place from Thursday 28 July to Sunday 31 July, on the new site: the Bietenplein at the Tiense Suikerraffinaderij.
